The District celebrates the achievements of workers in the United States. The United States observes the first Monday of September each year as Labor Day. Did you know New York was the first state to celebrate Labor Day on September 5, 1882? The District recognizes National Hispanic Heritage Month! This is a time to honor and reflect on the past and present contributions Hispanic/Latinx people have made to shape American culture. According to 2023 U.S. Census Bureau data, over 63.7 million Hispanic/Latinx people live in the United State - that's approximately 19.1% of the U.S. population or the largest racial or ethnic group. Hispanic/Latinx employees make up approximately 20% of the District's workforce.
